ARTIST STATEMENT

As life flows by I am captured by moments. Sights, thoughts, questions, and ideas found in these moments produce deep feelings. These moments seem important. They feel supernatural. They are sublime. They remain. Some haunt, some comfort, and some puzzle me.

I want to share these moments. I want to share them not only with those in this time and place, but with those that come after. These moments transcend words, or at least any that I can come up with. So I paint.

I am rarely satisfied with the results. I do however, find the process deeply rewarding. So I paint. I paint in hopes of capturing the clarity of not only what I see in a moment, but the entirety of what a moment contains.

True art successfully communicates a moment and its deep connection to humanity. It connects us to those that have come before, and those that come after. That belief makes me reluctant to claim the title “artist”. Yet I told all of my students that their creations were art, and thereby meant that they were artists. So I must accept the label.
